Just 2-3 hours from Manila, Mabini, Batangas is one of the Philippines' most accessible destinations for diving and freediving. Its coastline is home to coral reefs, marine life, and a variety of dive sites, making it a popular destination for both beginners and experienced divers.
We have been conducting freediving classes in Mabini since 2017, and our main headquarters is currently at Gypsy Homes, formerly known as Matahari.
We call our spaces Azul Home. But Azul Home isn't limited to one property.
Our main home base is in Mabini, but whenever we bring Azul to another resort or destination, that place becomes an Azul Home for our students during their stay.
Because for us, the sea is our home.
Mabini is close enough to Manila for a weekend trip but offers a completely different pace once you're by the water.
The area is well known for its diving and marine life, with reefs and dive sites accessible from different parts of the peninsula. This makes it a practical destination for people who want to learn freediving without traveling too far from the city.
For beginners, Mabini can be an ideal place to take your first steps into freediving.
For certified freedivers, it can also be a convenient place to return for practice, training, or simply a day in the ocean.
But where you train can make a big difference to the experience.
Our main Azul Home is located at Gypsy Homes, a RAID Freediving and Scuba Diving Center where our instructors conduct freediving and scuba diving classes.
Gypsy Homes is primarily a dive school and training center rather than a typical resort. When you come here for a class, you're coming to learn, train, and become more comfortable in the water.
But for our regular students and alumni, it has also become a place to come back to—to practice, swim, relax, spend time by the reef, or simply enjoy the ocean.
And there is something particularly special about the water directly in front of our home.
Unlike many parts of the Mabini coastline, our Azul Home has a sandy beach, making it easy to walk directly into the water.
Even underwater, you'll find areas of white sand, alongside soft corals and reef fish.
For someone learning to freedive, this makes a difference.
You can take your time entering the water instead of immediately dealing with a rocky shoreline or a crowded entry point. You can start by simply floating, breathing, and becoming comfortable with the ocean before progressing into your training.
It's also one of the reasons our students enjoy coming back even after completing their courses.
You don't always need a structured class.
Sometimes you just want to get in the water.
Mabini has a thriving diving community, and some areas can become quite busy, particularly when multiple dive and freediving schools are operating in the same area.
One of the differences at our headquarters is that there are no other freediving schools immediately beside us.
This gives our students a quieter stretch of water for training and means you're not surrounded by several freediving groups conducting classes at the same time.
For beginners, this can make the experience feel less overwhelming.
You can concentrate on your instructor, your breathing, your equalization, and your own progression without feeling like you're competing for space.
For experienced freedivers, it also means you can return to practice without the atmosphere feeling like a busy training pool.
Directly in front of our Azul Home is what we call Azul Reef.
The reef has soft corals and a variety of reef fish, making it an interesting place to explore even when you're not doing a formal training session.
It is also home to some familiar marine residents.
We currently have four resident sea turtles that we regularly encounter, as well as baby blue-spotted stingrays.
Of course, marine life is wild and sightings are never guaranteed. But having these animals regularly visit the area is one of the things that makes this stretch of Mabini special to us.
You might be working on your technique one moment and find yourself watching a turtle glide past the reef the next.
When conditions are right, we've spotted manta rays and thresher sharks breaching offshore, sometimes visible right from our deck.
Between around December and January, we've also seen dolphins jumping in the distance.
These are not encounters we promise to students because wildlife sightings depend entirely on nature and sea conditions.
And that's part of the magic.
You never completely know what the ocean is going to bring.
Our approach to freediving is centered around relaxation, comfort, confidence, and progressive learning.
Freediving isn't about forcing yourself to hold your breath longer or pushing yourself deeper simply because someone else can.
For beginners especially, the first goal is often much simpler: learning to feel comfortable in the water.
Our instructors guide students through breathing and relaxation, equalization, body position, finning, breath-hold techniques, and other skills according to their experience and progression.
The goal isn't to rush you through a checklist.
It's to help you understand your body and become more comfortable underwater.
Absolutely.
One of the things we love about having our own home base is seeing students return long after their first course.
You can come back for additional training, line sessions, practice, or simply a day by the water.
Some students come back specifically to work on their technique.
Others just want to swim with the turtles, enjoy the reef, have lunch, and watch the sunset.
You don't always have to be taking a class to enjoy Azul Home.
At Azul, we conduct our regular freediving classes in Mabini from October through mid-June, when conditions are generally more suitable for training.
We choose this season intentionally. Visibility, water conditions, wind, and waves can make a significant difference to a freediving session, and during the southwest monsoon season (habagat), the waves and sea conditions in Mabini are not always ideal for the comfortable, relaxed training experience we want our students to have.
Rather than simply offering classes year-round regardless of conditions, we prefer to schedule our Mabini operations around the period when we can give our students the best possible visibility and water conditions.
Of course, the ocean is always changing, so conditions can still vary from day to day. We continue to monitor the sea and adjust training plans when necessary.
For us, the goal isn't simply to get you into the water.
It's to give you the best conditions possible to learn, relax, and enjoy freediving.
Mabini is a good option for:
First-time freedivers
Beginners looking for a comfortable introduction to the ocean
Certified freedivers who want to practice
Students returning for additional training
Freedivers looking for a weekend trip from Manila
Travelers who want to combine freediving with a beach getaway
People who enjoy reef and marine-life encounters
Azul students who want to return to a familiar training environment
You don't need to be an advanced freediver to enjoy Mabini.
You simply need the willingness to learn and the patience to progress at your own pace.
There are many places where you can learn freediving.
For us, however, where you learn matters too.
At our Mabini Azul Home, you can walk from a sandy beach into the water, train without several freediving schools immediately beside you, explore a reef filled with soft corals and fish, and potentially encounter one of our resident turtles or stingrays.
After your session, you can sit on the deck and watch the sunset.
And if the conditions are right, you might even see dolphins, manta rays, or a thresher shark offshore.
We've been coming back to this stretch of Mabini since 2017.
It is where hundreds of students have taken their first steps into freediving, where returning students continue to train, and where our instructors have built a community around the ocean.
Our main headquarters may be in Gypsy Homes.
But Azul Home isn't really about a building.
Wherever we are with our students, the sea is home.
And in Mabini, this is where our home began.
Whether you're taking your first freediving course, returning for training, or simply looking for a place to practice and spend time in the ocean, Mabini is one of the places where you can experience Azul at home.
Come to learn.
Come back to practice.
Stay for the reef.
Welcome to Azul Home.
